Description

Fejes Toth Lecture poster

László Lovász will give the Inaugural László Fejes Tóth Lecture on September 4, 2023 at 4pm. The title of the talk is Graphs, Polytopes and Spectra.

The lecture will be followed by a wine-and-cheese reception, given by the Institute.

After the death of Alfréd Rényi, from 1970 to 1983, László Fejes Tóth served as the second director of the Mathematical Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. László Fejes Tóth was a world class mathematician, the founding father of the theory of Packing and Covering, an important branch of Discrete Geometry, with many applications in coding theory, number theory, group theory, and other disciplines. His classic monograph "Lagerungen in der Ebene, auf der Kugel und im Raum" was published by Springer in 1953. Its annotated English edition, the work of Gábor Fejes Tóth and Wlodzimierz Kuperperg, was published exactly 70 years after the first edition, in 2023.

The László Fejes Tóth Lecture Series and Medal were established by the Rényi Institute in 2023, to honor its second director and his influential work. The first lecturer and recipient of the medal is László Lovász, Abel Prize and Wolf Prize Laureate, a member of Rényi Institute.
